The Alternative Square Stitch
Alice from Bead and Button Magazine dubbed my stitch the
Alternative Square Stitch! You can try this with any loom pattern that
you already have!
These instructions are examples of how it works!
|
The stitch I use is quicker and softer than Peyote or Brick stitch.
The difference is that with Peyote and Brick stitch the beads are added one at a
time and stacked like bricks, as the stitch implies. With my square stitch the
beads are added four at a time and are stacked like loom work, one directly on
top of the other. The square stitch I use is different and is also called an off
loom stitch.

Start with a needle on a thread. Tie a sloppy knot at the end so your beads won’t slide off.
(pic 1) Put 10 beads on the thread. |
 |
(pic 2) Add 2 beads #’s 11 and 12.
Go through #’s 9 and 10.
Go back through #’s 11 and 12. |
 |
(pic 3) Add 4 beads #’ 13-16.
Go through #’s 5 and 6.
Go back through #’s 15 and 16.
|
 |
(pic 4) Add 4 beads #’s 17-20.
Go through #’s 1 and 2.
Go back through #’s 17 and 20.
|
 |
(pic 5) Tie a square knot with the two threads. |
 |
(pic 6) Add 4 beads #’s 21-24.
Go through #’s 17 and 18.
Go back through #’s 21 and 24. |
 |
The next thing to do with this stitch is a tube, or circle for a bag.
(pic 7) Add the amount of beads needed to go around the size bag you want.
The picture here shows 16, which in not really enough to make a bag!
|
 |
(pic 8) Add 4 beads #’s 17-20.
Go through #’s 4 and 3.
Go back through #’s 19 and 20. |
 |
(pic 9) Keep adding beads in this manner. Then pretty soon you’ll have the body of a bag!
